4 out of 5 "Mission 780A speakers."
Bought these years ago when I managed a popular hi-fi store. I owned them for years as I couldn’t find anything I liked more after listening to more than a few other speakers.
These aren’t the most civilised speakers but they are very good at everything rather than excellent at one.
The bass is low and tight, midrange open and airy with vocals coming through silky smooth above any amount of instrumentation or guitar howl and the treble is smooth and clean at all times, never sounding harsh, muddled or over the top.
All this is great but where I found my 780A’s excelled was the soundstage. Positioned correctly these speakers throw the illusion of being inside the performance right at the listener and are so forward and three dimensional that it took me six years to better them after I had decided to upgrade, finally settling on high end B &Ws.
They are big heavy boxes and need space to give their best performance but I guarantee that as big and heavy as they are they do punch well above their weight for sound quality, reliability and overall musicality.
I often regret selling them and wish I could grab them out of the loft and have another listen.
