An update: I've upgraded my system to a Cambridge Audio Azur 851N streamer, acting as a preamp for a PS Audio Stellar S300 power amp. My Tannoy 609s have more than risen to the challenge of better equipment. They sound incredible. I've eliminaged the toe-in to broaden the soundstage. And what a soundstage they deliver - it's holographic!

I’ve had a pair of Tannoy 609s (Mk I) since 1992, but didn’t much like them until I put them on Atacama Nexus stands rather than the floor and fed them with a NuForce DDA-100 from my laptop running Audirvana Plus and Dirac Live. The results are amazing: the Tannoys, which are already extremely precise, respond to the processed sound with startling clarity, and project a holographic image of the players in the space between them.

Highly enjoyable standmount speakers, with a treble and midrange unlike anything I've heard for there time, and even this time. A pin point soundstage once set up correctly, (for me this is 47cm from the rear wall, 200cm apart and toed in so that the side of the speaker is at the same angle as the side of your wall's). This speaker has more power and seismic bass weight then today's Sub £700 floor standers, these shake my flat and everything in it, with coherency. But make no mistake everything is highly controlled and timed to a pin drop, with realism. You must make sure your equipment and cables are up to par, at least Marantz 300+ kit these speakers also work well with old transistor say Quad 306 amp/ Valve amps. You'll have to spend at least £500 to better these speakers, they come with Van Den Hal internal speaker cable already. Make no mistake these are highly regarded and capable stand mounters, which sound better with there own marble metal and wood, sand filled/ fallible stands. The best second hand speakers I've ever purchased. Used with Quad 44 preamp/ Quad 306 poweramp and Chord Odessy 2 speaker cable, and interconnection.
