"It's surprisingly good"
|
During the Brexit, plenty of things were discounted on eBay from there, so I got it very cheap in mint condition.
It's surprisingly good for a cheap stereo amplifier. Nowadays, you can go with some Chinese things that quality, but this looks way better, has channel selector and very tactile. At this price point, I assume this as an added value.
It is excellent as headphones amplifier.

"marantz PM310"
|
I bought mine new in about 1983. It was part of a Hi-Fi starter system from my mums catalogue with Marantz 2 way bass reflex speakers and a record deck TT120 also finished in champaign gold all for £199. I modded it when it was about 4 years old, uprating the rectifier and capacitors this vastly improved the performance. it went wrong 10years ago leaky caps and dry joints on the driver stage. I fixed it and retired it to infrequent use in a home recording setup. Standard it was rated at 28w rms/ch after modding it kicked out more like 35-40w and the tone sounded with the controls flat as it used to with treble right up bass 3/4 up and loudness on. For a budget starter amp it was excellent value even better when you consider that its nearly 30years old and still works, volume and balance pots a bit crackly these days. The circuit is a good Hi-Fi amp design all discretes what lets it down is the cheapened power supply that must have been designed to get the good figures at 1khz but reduced the of the overall bandwidth capability of the amp. Also the lack of inputs Phono, Tuner, Tape and Aux before the days of CD when we got better sound from a diamond being scraped across a black plastic disk. I made a switcher and plugged into the aux to plug in CD player, Reel to Reel, Mixing Desk and a 2nd Cassette deck. There was another model PM340 I think? that had a mid tone control and higher o/p power. A bit old these days but having said that I replaced mine with a Kenwood KA1030 and regretted it ever since I would imagine that higher end Marantz amps from this era must have been and probably still are excellent PM610 if I recall correctly.
