4 out of 5 "Marantz PM45/35"
I' have the PM45 - looks very similar but has an extra tape input.

I use this as a phono preamp now as I bought a Naim Uitilite recently, which doesn't have one, and the preamp design looked very similar to the DIY circuits developed by the now creator of the ifi phono preamps. Sounds great to me through the Naim!

Back to the amp. Compared to the Naim it's somewhat lacking, obviously. Softer and a tad wooly, but wholly acceptable if you're not so critical. It has CD/Phono direct and Tone Defeat, which helps, but strangely this function doesn't cut out the loudness control but does cut out the balance - for me the opposite would have been preferable.

It has been reliable, but did suffer from one channel not coming on when powered up. To clear this you had to quickly wiz the volume up and back down to blast some signal through. I later found that it was the headphone socket that was the problem - inserting and removing a headphone jack a few times (amp off) seams to have cured it. Cleaning the contacts would be a better fix.

They're probably pretty cheap now on ebay.
